Each message you send has a mark next to its time. A clock means it’s still sending, one tick means it was sent, and two ticks mean the person has opened the chat since it arrived. Typing … under their name means they’re writing to you right now.
The marks on your messages
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| A clock | It’s still leaving your phone. |
| One tick | It was sent. Ayyam has it. |
| Two ticks | They’ve opened the chat since your message arrived. |
| A warning mark, and Not sent under the message | It didn’t go. |
Good to know about two ticks
- Two ticks mean they opened the chat, not that they read every word.
- There’s no step for “arrived on their phone”. A message can sit on one tick even though it’s on their phone, until they open the chat.
- There’s no setting to turn the ticks off.
- A chat that’s still a message request stays on one tick, even after they open it, until they accept it. See What are message requests?
Typing
While they’re writing to you, their name at the top says Typing … and three dots show at the bottom of the chat. It goes away when they stop, or after five seconds.
Active now
Under their name you may see Active now, or how long ago they were last active. That only shows when both of you have Show activity status on in Settings → Privacy. Turn yours off and you won’t see theirs either.
The website shows no ticks, typing or activity yet.
