Open their profile, tap Following and then Unfollow. They aren’t told. Their posts stop coming to your Following feed, and posts they shared only with followers are hidden from you.
Unfollow someone
Unfollow someone in the app
- Open their profile.
- Tap Following.
- Tap Unfollow.
There are two quicker ways.
- On one of their posts, tap ⋯ and then Unfollow with their username. If their account is private, the app asks first.
- In your own Following list, tap Following next to their name, or ⋯ and then Unfollow. The app asks Unfollow and their name first. To open the list, tap the Following count on your profile.
Unfollow someone on the website
Open their profile and click Following. The website asks Unfollow and their name first. Click Unfollow.
You can do the same from your Following list. Open your profile, click Following, and click Following next to the person.
If their account is private
You lose their posts and stories the moment you unfollow. To see them again you’d have to send a new request and wait for them to accept it. The app warns you before you go ahead: Their account is private, so you would have to ask again to follow.
What else changes
- No notification goes out, and nothing on their side says who left.
- If they had you in one of their circles, you stop seeing those posts too.
- Your chat with them stays where it is.
- A public account’s posts can still turn up in your For you feed, the way anyone’s can.
Tip: To stop seeing someone’s posts without unfollowing them, tap ⋯ on their profile and then Mute. They aren’t told about that either.
To stop someone following you instead, remove them from your followers.
