In Settings → Security, tap Recovery codes, then Get new codes. Enter your password, and you get 10 new codes. The ones you had before stop working straight away, used or not.

Get new codes

  1. On Home, tap your profile picture at the top to open Settings, then tap Security.
  2. Tap Recovery codes. The row says how many you have left.
  3. Tap Get new codes.
  4. Enter your password and tap Get new codes again.
  5. Save the new codes, then tap I’ve saved them.

Copy all puts all 10 on your clipboard, so you can paste them into a password manager. If you try to leave before tapping I’ve saved them, the app asks Have you saved them?, because they won’t be shown again.

When to do it

  • You’ve used most of them. The count turns red on the two-factor screen when 2 or fewer are left.
  • You’ve lost the copy you saved.
  • Someone else may have seen them.

If you signed up with Google or Apple and have no password, step 4 asks for a code from your authenticator app, or one of your old recovery codes, instead.

If you don’t see Recovery codes

The row only appears while two-factor authentication is on. Without it, there are no codes to replace.

New codes can only be made in the app.
