Type @ in your caption and start typing their name. A list of people opens under the caption, and tapping one puts in their username. Once the post is up, the mention links to their profile, and they get a notification.

Mention someone
Mention someone in the app
- In the caption on New post, type @, or tap @mention under the caption.
- Keep typing their name or username. Straight after the @, the list shows people you follow.
- Tap the right person. Their username goes into the caption.
Mention someone on the website
- In the caption, type @, or click @mention.
- Type their name and pick them from the list.
You can also type the whole username yourself, like @sara_k3f9. It works the same as picking it.
A mention or a tag?
- A mention is part of your words. It shows in the caption and nowhere else.
- A tag puts the post on the person’s Tagged tab, even if your caption doesn’t name them.
Both send the person a notification. They switch those off together, with Tags and mentions in Settings → Notifications.
Good to know
- Up to 20 people in one caption become links. Any after that stay as plain text.
- The @ has to start a word, so an email address like name@example.com isn’t a mention.
- If you edit the caption later and add someone new, they get a notification too. People already mentioned don’t get a second one.
- If they change their username, the caption keeps the old one, but the link still opens their profile.
